Disc Central ICT System – Hardware and Software Requirements
The system will comprise of…
An office computer – this
will be used for writing letters to customers, editing the customer database
and managing the company accounts. It
should be installed with the software needed to complete these tasks. It should
also have a good quality colour printer.
A sales desk computer –
this will give the sales assistant access to the database and the ability to
assign/ remove a disc to or from a customer’s records. If possible Debbie would like a hand held
bar code scanner to be attached to this workstation. There is no need for a printer to be attached. A separate cash register (not part of your
system) will issue a receipt to customers.
A touch screen computer –
this will give customers read only access to the DVD and Games database tables
to browse through the shop’s stock. The
base unit will be hidden away in a cupboard, the touch screen monitor will sit
on top of this.
A network switch - this will link the three machines together
in a “peer-to-peer” network. This means
that all workstations will be able to see the database you will be
creating. In a peer-to-peer network
there is not a main server computer.
The network will be
arranged like this. The lines show the
network cables required. This type of
cabling forms a star network.
Your diagram of the system
should include all items of hardware attached to each workstation (e.g.
keyboard etc.) It should also show the
network cabling as above. It would be
best hand drawn onto plain paper.
For each machine state
In each case you should
state the reasons for your choice
